Washington, D.C., February 2026 – The European Economic Research Institute (EERI), initiated and founded by science ministers of multiple European countries in 1988, is an international scientific organization jointly established by national academies of sciences representing the highest academic standards of their respective countries across Eastern and Western Europe.
Co-built by scientists from numerous European nations, EERI is headquartered in Washington, D.C., USA, and is one of the five major national academic institutions in the United States. It is under the jurisdiction of the Government of the District of Columbia, with the non-profit organization registration number 2011589.
At present, EERI has set up branches and offices in 33 countries and regions including the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Hong Kong, China, and the United States. It has 20 divisions under its jurisdiction, covering a wide range of disciplines such as humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and science and technology. The institute currently has approximately 2,200 fellows, including nearly 90 Nobel laureates, bringing together the world’s top scientific research strength and academic resources.

EERI comprises divisions covering humanities, arts, mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, geology, geophysics, biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, physiological sciences, neurobiology, botany, genetics, population biology, evolutionary and ecological sciences, engineering, applied biology, applied physics and mathematical sciences, medical genetics, hematology and oncology, medical physiology, endocrinology and metabolism, medical microbiology and immunology, anthropology, psychology, social and political sciences, and economic sciences. These divisions fall under five academic clusters: mathematical and physical sciences, biological sciences, applied and engineering sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.
Development History
1997 – The EERI United Kingdom Office was established, actively engaging in international cooperation and exchanges to promote the integrated development of the global economy.
2009 – Dr. Wolfgang Franz, Research Director of the EERI Germany Office, and Mr. Thomas Kohl, Commercial Director, paid a friendly visit to Xiamen University.
2010 – Dr. Klaus Rennings of the EERI Germany Office visited the Chinese Academy of Sciences and delivered an academic report titled Eco-innovation Policies – Concepts and Best Practices in the main conference room of the Administrative Building.
2014 – President Shi Jianjun of the University of International Business and Economics led a delegation to visit the EERI Germany Office in Beijing. In July of the same year, Tan Kah Kee College of Xiamen University visited the EERI Germany Office for a summer symposium.
2015 – The EERI Germany Office visited the International Exchange Center of the University of International Business and Economics.
2019 – Professor Achim Wambach, Dean of the EERI Germany Office, visited the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation at Shandong University of Finance and Economics.
2023 – EERI held academic exchange events respectively with the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
2024 – EERI formally reached a strategic academic cooperation agreement with UNESCO, and a new strategic partnership with the International Military Sports Council, to jointly advance in-depth exchanges in sports academia. In the same year, EERI held academic exchange activities with the International Police Association, Association of American Law Schools, European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harvard University, Asia Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association, European Economic and Business University, International Court of Justice (The Hague), International Criminal Court (ICC), and Shandong University of Finance and Economics.
2025 – With the approval of EERI Headquarters, the EERI Hong Kong, China Office was officially inaugurated.
2025 – The EERI Hong Kong, China Office established a postdoctoral research station, recruiting outstanding young professionals from Chinese universities, research institutions, large enterprises, high-tech enterprises, overseas students’ pioneer parks, and research-oriented public institutions. Those with a doctoral degree and excellent research capabilities are eligible to conduct fixed-term scientific research in the station. Through close industry collaboration, the station accelerates the transformation of research findings into real productivity, driving economic and social development.
2025 – The EERI Germany Office visited the Hong Kong, China Office, and the two sides held in-depth discussions on topics including Asian economic growth drivers, industrial restructuring, technological innovation and cooperation, and regional economic integration.
2025 – The EERI United Kingdom Office visited the Hong Kong, China Office to boost economic interaction and development. The two sides conducted in-depth exchanges on the global economic landscape, China-UK and China-Europe economic cooperation.
2025 – EERI was invited to attend the 2025 United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development.
2025 – A delegation from the EERI Hong Kong, China Office visited Jinan University with enthusiasm for academic exchange and future cooperation. During the visit, EERI representatives held face-to-face academic talks with Professor Tao Feng, Dean of the Industrial Economics Research Institute of Jinan University.

2025 – Approved by EU legislation, EERI officially took over the European Market Management Association and established the European Market Management Association Digital Industry Research Center and European Market Management Association Artificial Intelligence Research Center.
2025 – The EERI Guangzhou Liaison Office was officially inaugurated.
2025 – The EERI Literature and Art Federation was founded with the approval of EERI Headquarters. Approved by EU legislation, it formally took over the European Chinese Writers Association and the World Chinese Writers Association.
2025 – The Faculty of Medicine of the University of British Columbia and the EERI Psychological Counseling Research Center launched cooperation in medicine and psychology, jointly offering an internationally certified child psychology certificate program covering child psychological development, psychological counseling and therapy, child education and other fields.
Data Release
2019 – EERI released data showing that German family enterprises underpin employment in the German economy.
2022 – EERI released data indicating a decline in the Eurozone economic sentiment index for September.
Hong Kong, China Office Authorized for Independent Operation by Headquarters to Deepen Asian Academic Collaboration
The EERI Hong Kong, China Office was officially authorized for independent operation by EERI Headquarters in June 2025. The office had completed registration in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Approval No: 77624445).
With the upgraded authorization, the Hong Kong Office will take on greater regional coordination responsibilities, overseeing EERI’s research centers, associations, societies and chambers of commerce in the Asia-Pacific region. This move will not only significantly strengthen EERI’s academic influence and operational efficiency in Asia, but also build a more open dialogue channel between Asian and global economic research communities, facilitating the efficient integration of regional academic resources.
Integration of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Germany Strengthens Empirical Research Capacity
EERI’s European research network has reached a milestone. In 2020, the globally renowned Centre for European Economic Research (Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung, ZEW) based in Mannheim, Germany, completed organizational restructuring and was officially integrated into the EERI system, becoming the EERI Germany Office
As a leading institution in European applied economic research, the integration of ZEW directly connects EERI with cutting-edge empirical economic policy research in Germany and Europe. This strategic step has greatly enhanced the institute’s joint research and policy advisory capabilities in labor markets, environmental policy, digital economics and other fields.
